Chapter Three

This Is Far From Over.

"She won. I can't believe Aphrodite won." Hedone sat at her parents' empty table. Tonight had so much promise, then Aphrodite showed up and it spiraled into a disaster. And oh, the embarrassment! Hedone groaned as she laid her forehead on the table and placed both hands over her head. How could she even think about approaching her willowy muse in this emotional state? Who would want to date this loser?

Artemis and Iphigenia occasionally checked on Hedone. She just gave them a sad little shrug and muttered. "Don't mind me. Enjoy your dinner." Whenever a diner tried to get Hedone's attention, Artemis summoned their food and drink, or she glared until they called for another waitress.

Hedone thought about going to her parents' home and check on them. But she knew they would tell her to stay out of it, then disappear to who knows where. Hedone obsessed over where she went wrong. Unless she was in two places at once, there was no preventing the catastrophe. And despite being born a love goddess, she had been rendered powerless by her own grandmother.

"No." Hedone slammed a fist on the table. "I refuse to be outdone by that glorified twat." But first she needed a proper plan before challenging Aphrodite again.

Hedone picked up a water goblet and moved it to the left side of the table. "Aphrodite." Next, she slid the second goblet to the right. "Me."

Then she held up the fork that could only have been her mother's because it was in the shape of a spear long enough to fit across her palm. "Mama." She placed the spear beside the water goblet that represented her, then put the second fork next to the Aphrodite goblet. "Baba."

She stared at the pieces before her. "Now where did I go wrong? What could I have done differently?" Hedone replayed the evening in her mind. "Maybe I should've recruited help with better experience?"

Hedone pushed the rest of the cutlery into the middle of the table along with the salt and pepper shakers. "The Erotes."

She looked across the dance floor to where her father's siblings enjoyed themselves. They didn't seem worried about Eros and Psyche, merely carried on with their evening. Hymie sat with Dionysus' entourage and flirted with several of the men. Ditus enjoyed a rousing discussion with his father, Hermes, at twice the normal speed. Their heads and hand gestures moved in almost a blur. Hedylogos cuddled as many nymphs as he could. Anteros did his usual smoldering gaze that attracted the more emo dryads while Himeros danced with four sirens at the same time.

At their wedding, her father's siblings were happy to accept Psyche into the family, far earlier than Aphrodite did. Hedone moved the cutlery and shakers to the right.

"But their loyalty remains with their brother," murmured Hedone. "Whatever decision he makes, they will support." She pushed the group to the left. "But The Erotes need Eros at the top of his game without marital troubles, otherwise they might lose their jobs.
